This week's skill building is about WORK skills
Thematic Media
Hope offers project search options. Ask around your district and find out who has tried the program.
Thematic Activity
Your disability is your private information. You can decide if you want to tell your employer about your disability so that you can get accommodations.
Accommodations are when an employer is required to help you arrange the conditions of your work. Watch this skit by Job Accommodations Network about deciding how to handle this.
JAN helps people handle these kinds of situations.
- Would you want to tell your employer about your disability if you wanted accommodations?
- Why or why not?
- If you have a disability that people can see, would you want your employer to ask you about accommodations before you asked?

- What made Anna misunderstand Tom's invitation?
- Did Tom correct her misunderstanding in a nice way?
- Can you remember a time when you were too busy to talk to someone? Did it mean that you didn't want to meet them? Or was it just bad timing?

Skills Media—5 Skills you need for ANY job
Review the skills listed in this article.
Skills Information
Having these skills will help you keep stress low, participate happily with co-workers, and enjoy your work.
How can these simple skills affect our well-being so much?
- Clutter and disroder cause stress
- Lateness hurts your relationships, especially at work, where people are counting on you
- Poor listening and forgetting things is a sign of stress, or that you don't really care about something-If it's stress, ask for help. If you don't care, ask yourself why you have lost interest.
- Low self-confidence and low self-motivation can cause serious health problems if we let it go on too long
When we do a good job at work we feel confident and motivated. When we start to slip, or have some set-backs it can be hard to recover and get to back to where we are doing well. And yet, the truth is we will all have times when we can't perform at our best so we need to know how to get through those times so we can enjoy our jobs even when they become difficult or we are overwhelmed for a while.
- Don't make excuses. Accept true feedback and information.
- If a boss or co-worker has a criticism of your performance, try to keep calm and listen with your brain instead of your feelings. Your feelings try to protect you, but your brain knows how to solve problems. Let your brain handle this kind of problem and use your feelings to be open and honest with other people.
- Remember that no situation lasts forever. You will find a solution if you stay calm and take in the facts. Trust yourself. You are getting life experience in these situations.

Self-Assessing for Career Options
You have the right to choose your own career.
You don't HAVE to accept any work that is offered to you. HOWEVER if you just say no because you don't know what is being offered, you may miss out on a great opportunity.
Brainstorm some options for each item from the video.

- So fear can make us turn down opportunities. How can we tell if we are just scared, or if something really won't suit us? TRY IT of course!
- Why INTERNSHIPS are important
- San Diego County has an internships for people with intellectual disabilities so why not here?
Thursday is all about self-advocacy and your rights. We've talked about how the county and city elected officials work for the public and should listen to the public.
SO! here's a huge challenge.
Would you advocate with your county or city to provide internships for people with intellectual disabilities? HOW?
Skills Information
First check your city or county for internships for people with intellectual disabilities.
PRESENTERS: Demonstrate a search using the shared screen and go to some results to see what comes up.
If there is no program, find your council member for your district
Then email them, call the, or write to them and say you want a program like that started.
Skills Applied
You will need other people to call them too and say the same thing.
You can start a petition and have everyone sign it who agrees with you then show it to the county board member to make it clear that you are not the only one who wants this.
What other things have learned that people do for advocacy to get things changed? How can you convince a public office holder to do something that they may not think needs doing when they first hear about it?
*REMEMBER they want to get re-elected!
PRESENTERS: Choose a video from the options in the channel. The videos are long form so you can do the beginning warm up and a few exercises instead of doing the entire regimen, unless your group wants to do a longer physical activity session.
